MAY 25, 2020: After she was sexually assaulted in 5th grade, Gwendolyn Morgan Flowers, now a graduating senior at St. Michael Indian School from Ft. Defiance, AZ, experienced trouble sleeping, change in appetite, and withdrawal from school and other activities. When she started receiving proper counseling, she began reflecting on the mental health challenges her peers were also facing in her community.

In response, Gwendolyn founded the Native American Music Fund (NAMF), with the goal to provide free music instruments and lessons to children in the Navajo Reservation. She writes, “I knew I needed to help create a safe place for my friends to meet. I loved music, and had a vision to gift children with instruments and create a program to teach music.”

Gwendolyn works hard at NAMF to organize arts engagement field trips, facilitate workshops, and coordinate fundraising. She is devoted to her students, her peers, and to her community. Gwendolyn, who will begin college this fall, hopes to become a lawyer, protecting children’s safety. She shares, “I want to be a voice for children who share my experience and protect future generations from abuse.”

Richie's Spirit Foundation congratulates Gwendolyn Morgan Flowers on being selected as a 2020 Finalist! Please join us, on May 26th at 8:30 pm ET for a live virtual Award Ceremony, where this year’s recipients will be announced. Register Here.
