Richie's Spirit Foundation presented the First Annual Plano Senior High School College Scholarship to Ms. Geneva Werner. Ms. Werner is a senior at Plano Senior High School in Plano, TX, where Richie was a student. She will receive $1,000 towards her future education at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
When asked, "what is the importance of organ donation to you?" Ms. Werner wrote about her high school friend whose tragic death lead the family to make the untimely decision to donate their daughter's organs. Ms. Werner explained how this experience changed her outlook and gave her a better understanding of the power of organ donation.
"To offer another opportunity for a healthy life through the gift of organ donation is a powerful event," she wrote. "Giving the gift of life is a selfless act that lets the deceased live on through the renewed lives of others."
Additionally, Ms. Werner achieved high academic honors despite her mother's cancer diagnosis and has kept a positive spirit through adversity. She is involved in the student government, captain of the school volleyball team, and President of the math club.
RSF Board Member and Richie's cousin, Phillip Jacobs, was able to present Ms. Werner with her award at the Plano High senior awards night. What a great moment for the Foundation!
