Kira Conard Named 2015 Finalist
At a young age, Kira Conard, a senior from a small town in Iowa, was the victim of sexual assault at the hands of a trusted family member. Though she feared for her safety and was repeatedly threatened by her abuser, Kira found the strength to confide these series of events to her mother who immediately sought help.
The next several years were a roller coaster for Kira and her family as they sought prosecution against a man that had also abused Kira's three older sisters.
"After becoming aware of our situation, the county attorney brought seven chargers against our abuser," Kira wrote. "We were brought into court for several depositions and had to summon the courage over and over again to have the ability to testify against someone we once trusted."
After nearly three years and a long, emotional trial, Kira and her sisters' abuser was convicted and sentenced to twenty years behind bars. While it was a relief, the emotional scars that the experience left behind will always be a reminder of the more difficult times.
Miraculously, Kira says she has put this part of her life behind her and that she is now a much stronger person because of it.
"Through the support of family, friends, and our church, I was able to come to the 'other side' of this heinous crime," she wrote. "I grew in character, courage, and in faith and have garnered a desire to help others. I want to be their voice in situations similar to mine."
Kira, who plans to attend Iowa State University in the Fall, has achieved high honors in school. She is a member of her high school's band, receiving a #1 rating for her talents on the saxophone. She is heavily involved with her local church as both a member of the Praise Team and an assistant teacher for the Worship Hour Program.
Richie's Spirit Foundation would like to congratulate Kira for reaching the final round of the scholarship program. Please stay tuned for the announcement of our winners later this Spring.
